Today and every day, we will fight for a world where all transgender and non-binary people are able to lives their lives as their full selves, free from discrimination.” Alphonso David, Human Rights Campaign President However, even as we celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility, we must recognize and remember that there are many trans and non-binary people in this country, and across the globe, who are not able to safely live their lives as their full selves, as well as those who face discrimination and violence for living openly. Transgender people are our friends and family, our neighbors and our colleagues - and, like all of us, simply want to live their lives every day as who they are. We are proud to recognize International Transgender Day of Visibility and the determination it takes for transgender and non-binary people to be living openly and authentically today. Thank you for continuing to make BC a better, more equitable place for all.In the face of seemingly relentless attacks, transgender and non-binary people are more visible than ever before. And creating a welcoming environment where they can thrive. Learning more about the significant contributions they’ve made. This includes deepening our understanding of the challenges and issues transgender people face. We, as a country and as a college, need to do more to achieve trans justice. It is important that we do not limit our transgender support and advocacy to a single day. And they would have even deeper impact on BIPOC trans people. These bills attack the transgender community by threatening economic, legal, and reputational damages. This marks the highest number of anti-transgender bills in history. And though we have seen some progress on the federal level, there have been 95 anti-transgender bills introduced in state legislatures since January 1st. Levine faced transphobic questions and comments during her congressional hearing. Rachel Levine has made history by becoming the first openly transgender person to be confirmed by the Senate to a federal position.Īt the same time, Dr. Congress is considering the Equality Act. This year we can celebrate President Biden’s signing of an Executive Order on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation. International Transgender Day of Visibility provides an opportunity to celebrate and advocate for transgender people on our campus, in our families, and in our community. In 2009, transgender activist Rachel Crandall created International Transgender Day of Visibility to build awareness of the many contributions transgender people have made to our society, while also raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide.
